Silly Season Has Now Begun In Earnest
Assume, if you will, that I am the reigning party in DC – all three branches. Assume further that silly season has now begun in earnest. Go ahead and make another assumption, that being the writing IS on the wall regarding my party taking a serious shellacking for reasons ranging from inflation, general history, Joe Biden being seriously underwater, and other negative events over which I may or may not have control (i.e. Russia-Ukraine.) And assume that I want to give my republican friends a nice gift.
Well, that is what I am doing. Euphemistically speaking, “I” is meaning the party in power. Start with the border crisis: it can only be called that (until May 23 at which time you can call it a super-crisis.) First, we put Kamala Harris in charge. That was likely the biggest mistake Biden made since he chose her as his running mate. She did exactly nothing at all; zero, zilch, nada, nothing to improve the matter. We did learn that she had not been to Europe, however. That was in important plus. Many of Biden’s appointees could be singled out for their political value rather than their talent, but we will stick to DHS for this matter.
Then we hand the matter to Mayorkas, another useful idiot. I’m not sure he is useful, but he certainly is an idiot. His border plans make those of Kamala seem intelligent. At least she did nothing. He plans to pull the plug on Title 42 while vulnerable democrats beg for mercy.
He’s arrived at the pinnacle of uselessness to the democratic party now, however. He has new, unneeded, and unwanted policies just in time to be looked at as what they are, frivolous and meaningless waste and damaging to the democratic brand in the worst possible way.
The Truth Squad. Well, the newly formed ‘Disinformation Governance Board’ (whatever that is and whatever that does – not well explained yet)
At a time when trust in government is at nearly an all-time low, the Biden admin has decided to implement what – if brought forth by the republican party – would be prime-time news on every network, possibly including FOX! How deaf can they be? This might be looked at as buying votes, or an attempt there at, but factually the only voters animated by this will be on the right.
How can we make this worse, you ask? Well, how about we nominate a megaphone of disinformation to be the public face of this? Someone who calls the Hunter laptop Russian disinformation. Like Nina Jankowicz, a self-styled “disinformation expert” whose real specialty seems to be disseminating disinformation to support her very own left-wing views.
Just how bad are Jankowicz’s views? Judge for yourself.
Hunter Biden’s laptop, she announced publicly, was a fake: “We should view it as a Trump campaign product.” In a Tweet, she repeated claims that “the laptop is a Russian influence [operation].” Or… She promoted the author of the now-discredited Steele dossier as a resource to combat disinformation.
She supports critical race theory and considers its opponents “disinformers.” “Critical race theory has become one of those hot-button issues that the Republicans and other “disinformers” who are engaged in disinformation for profit, frankly…have seized on,” she said in October. “But it’s no different than any of the other hot-button issues that have allowed disinformation to flourish…. It’s weaponizing people’s emotion.”
Biden’s admin has some really bad habits, and this kind of obstinacy is a hallmark of the Biden administration. Its officials stick with divisive, ideologically driven policies, even when it is clear those policies aren’t working. On far too many policies and issues, they keep driving into a brick wall, then backing up and smashing it again. Why change, just because the policies are failing and voters are uniquely and vocally unhappy? Why should DHS be any different from Biden’s other agencies?
According to Charles Lipson, the Peter B. Ritzma Professor of Political Science Emeritus at the University of Chicago (no right-wing conspirator) DHS’ decision to form a disinformation board, appoint Nina Jankowicz to head it and then refuse to drop it when the defects and political blowback became clear, is just the latest example of such obstinacy. The department’s recalcitrance is a threat to civil liberties and a political gift to Republicans.
